i mean i think it’s super easy to just say ‘white people/europeans are inherently evil’ and just leave it at that, and such a statement makes sense as a point of catharsis, but I’m not convinced that such a statement works as an actual point of analysis. How did the ideology of race (and thus the concept of a white person in the first place) develop? That’s one important question of many that the statement fails to address, a question with no easy answers. There’s a reason why centuries of study has been devoted to these questions, and if the answer was “white people are evil” and that’s that, the books on critical race theory would be very short.
If my analysis was simply that, i’d be a bad anthropologist, a bad historian and a bad leftist.
What i’m saying is, it’s a big and complex world, and the best thing for me (and everyone else) to do is to assume that I know very little, that there is a lot for me learn about this world, a lot of ways in which there is room for my understanding of the world to develop and grow.
The whole “Europe is to blame for everything” is a pseudo-progressive and secretly Eurocentric answer because its something that you can only say if you are ignorant of non-Western history. Its like just an impossible position to hold if you take non-Western histories and accounts seriously
Yes yes yes. I am glad that I took an Indian history course that actually covered all of its history - especially considering that India’s recorded history goes back much further than most of Europe’s. It really opened my eyes. A history of India that begins with Europeans showing up (and they’re the bad guys) is not actually much less racist or Eurocentric than the old colonialist-written triumphalist histories.
The idea that non-European peoples lived in perfect peace and harmony before white people screwed everything up is just Noble Savage racism. Non-European peoples are human beings capable of war and oppression, not naive creatures who instinctively live in peace and harmony due to not knowing anything else.
One of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy’s greatest achievements is the Great Law of Peace - a code for how the (originally five) nations of the Haudenosaunee can live in peace, self-govern democratically, and engage in war with other nations only when necessary.
This was an achievement. It came out of a time period of brutal civil war and tyranny among the Haudenosaunee. What the Peacemaker did was invent a social technology for just government in a time of injustice, and it is an outrage to dishonor what he did by saying that non-European peoples couldn’t understand what real war and tyranny were before European invasion.
